A mentor is an experienced individual who acts as a role model to others who are not-so experienced. The purpose of mentoring is for one individual to pass along knowledge and to share experiences with another individual who may be traveling along a similar path.
A mentor then becomes an advisor and trusted friend using whom the protégé may gain valuable advise and guidance to help facilitate their personal and professional growth.
Mentoring is not a one-way street. Mentors gain as much from the relationship as the protégés do.
For protégés, mentoring helps them grow their knowledge of leadership skills and management practices. They also have the opportunity to discuss issues with an experienced person. Mentors also open doors for their protégés to help them gain access to others in their network to help facilitate and promote more growth. Mentors also become good sounding boards to provide protégés with honest and constructive feedback along with support and encouragement.
On the other hand, mentoring provides mentors with the opportunity to reflect on past experiences and to share what worked and didn’t work for them. Mentors also gain different perspectives and new ideas when they work with protégés. And last but not the least, mentors may gain personal satisfaction in teaching others.
